Those in the group who did not make estimated tax payments by Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, must file their 2024 federal income tax returns and pay any taxes owed by Monday, March 3, 2025.

Due to the deadline falling on a Saturday, it has been extended from the usual Saturday, March 1, to Monday, March 3.

Details of the Early Deadline

Farmers and fishers who qualify for this special deadline are those who derived at least two-thirds of their gross income from their respective trades during either 2023 or 2024.

This provision allows them to avoid penalties associated with failing to make estimated tax payments. Those who did make a qualifying payment by the mid-January deadline can adhere to the standard April 15, 2025, deadline instead.

To facilitate the filing process, the IRS recommends utilizing the online payment options available through IRS.gov

Taxpayers can pay electronically from their bank accounts using either an IRS Online Account or IRS Direct Pay, both of which are free of charge.

Special Provisions for Disaster Areas

Taxpayers located in disaster areas, including many farmers and fishers, are granted additional time to file and pay their taxes.

Currently, individuals in states such as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, along with parts of Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, have until Thursday, May 1, 2025, to meet their tax obligations. This extension is automatic, requiring no further action from the taxpayers.

Those in disaster areas who require further extensions beyond May 1 can file a request for an extension until October 15, 2025; however, any tax payments must still be made by May 1.

Resources for Taxpayers

Farmers and fishers are encouraged to refer to the IRS publications tailored to their specific needs. For more comprehensive guidance, resources such as Publication 505, Farmer’s Tax Guide, and the Tax Guide for Small Business are available on the IRS website.

For additional information regarding payment options, taxpayers can visit IRS.gov/payments. The IRS aims to simplify the tax filing process, ensuring that all eligible individuals can meet their obligations with ease.
